The fifteen stalwart frostbiters
that braved the bitter cold had a great day for sailing. The wind looked like
it might be light as the racers left the dock, but the wind picked up before
the first race and was more often in the 10+ range than it was in the 6- range.
The wind started off from the southwest and gradually shifted around progressively
to the southeast. In the first race out to mark 4 off the breakwater, the boats
that went hard left found more wind and less current. Nelson and Garrett led
the pack with the usual suspects far to the rear. But position was everything
and Peter and Tim hugged the shore by the Shipyard and passed everybody and
took 1-2. Race two was another starboard triangle with mark 5 as the weather
mark. Nelson again made the top mark first, but Tim got the inside overlap at
the leeward mark and took the bullet. The third and fourth races were up the
channel. Tim and Jill led the third but rounded the wrong leeward mark and were
scored DNF. Chuck and Tim finished strong with each taking a first and a second
(after Chuck was forgiven for being over early when the RC called out Tim's
sail number instead of Chuck's in the fourth race. The last race was sailed
out to the Gong and back to the club.
